Here is a pair of carved hardwood bookends with a theme taken from Cervantes' great masterpiece of Spanish literature, Don Quixote. These are a matched pair- with one portion depicting the aged knight Don Quixote slumped in the saddle on his horse and the other, his sidekick, Sancho sitting upright on his donkey. The centers of each show halves of a turret from a medieval Spanish castle which fit together as a whole when the two parts are joined together.
These each are 9" tall, measured from the top of the turret to the bottom of the 3/4" thick slab which forms the base; each base is10" wide and rounded at the outer sides. The base slabs are 2 1/4" wide, with the figures about 1 1/4" thick and finely detailed on both sides.. These are made of oiled hardwood with figures and castle portions attached separately to the base and they look fairly contemporary in age, perhaps a memento of a visit to Spain, but there is no information on the pieces as to actual maker or place of origin.
The carved figures and the castle portions are in FINE condition, but there were splits to the wood on the base bottoms sometime in their history and they have been re-glued in two places, also there is one very light moisture stain to one upper edge of the Sancho bookend. Condition noted, but the repairs are hardly noticeable from the above- These are unusual bookends with a great literary reference.
