All rocks have been found on private land! My specialty is hunting and finding carved effigies. I have a knack for recognizing them. They are often tools but maybe used for more ceremonial purposes. What I am referring to are portable rock sculptures, things that are mobile as oppose to mysterious rock alignments, stone piles and circles of stone or petroglyphs on cave walls or boulders. Most arrowhead hunters miss this impressive treasure hidden in plain sight. So bent on finding objects of war and hunting they overlook not recognizing these amazing pieces of art that are so simplistic but intricate with detail. I don’t believe modern artist would be able to recreate it today because of its holographic form. These rocks have a story to tell if you learn to perceive them in an unordinary way. They are optical illusions carved in stone thousands of years ago. These artifacts are usually classified to evolve from Paleolithic era. The figures are often zoomorphic (of or relating to a deity or other being conceived of as having the form of an animal.) As you turn them the image will morph (change smoothly from one image to another by small gradual steps being turns) These figures or sculptures are polymorphic/polyiconic - multiple images in one. If you keep rotating the rock ever so slight and observe the carvings from different perspectives the figure disappears and morphs into another figure. Using a light source often positioned vertically allows for other subtle characters to appear, which has a feeling of some language that is written in the stone. These artist convey amazing images that are not only very intricate in detail, using just a few carved strokes along with the rocks inherent features of color, fissures, size and shape along with the interplay of light and shadow produce masterful works of art. One of the things I find fascinating about the designs in the rocks many of them seem to have a Mayan influence especially since we are so close to that area, some might feel like they have some Egyptian influence, and there are those that have an influence of design you would see in Hindu or Buda ruins. Then there are effigy’s that are classically Native American imagery. I feel like there are rocks from different timelines but the most intricate ones feel the oldest to me. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE STONESThe first thing to inspect for is the indication of it being worked. It feels to me the artist would enhance the inherent attributes of a particular rock exemplify the spirit creating sculptural image. This was created by removing part of the rock surfaces by incising, chipping / pecking, abrading, and carving. How it feels in the hand and how the piece balances.Check the outline of the rocks for images especially profile faces. Areas that are carved make sure to exam the positive and negative space for that is where the image often morphs into another one. Slowly turn the rock in different angles. For unlocking or bringing to light for micro symbols and images to start appearing. Iconic Symbols appear on the rocks like a form of writing. The eye is the most unmistakable feature that is the easiest and often most striking to notice when casually looking at the figure stone / effigy sculpture. Eyes are the most recognizable evidence that it is an artifact. An eye will be distinctly carved in the appropriate place for whatever animal or human image portraying. The detail is ordinarily circular or diamond shaped with a distinct raised or indented pupil. A frontal face might have one eye open and the other closed. Another attribute is that the eye has some type of substance that can catch the light and seem to “ta-wink” at you from a certain angle. These figures or sculptures are a consistent form of zoomorphic iconology. Their functional tools would most often be embellished to represent the bird and shaman like hybrid bird human at least abstractly. In their (animism/ shamanism) belief system birds played a dominate role. The head of a Bird Spirit may be strongly anthropomorphic, with distinctly human nose and eyes at the front of the face, or more bird-like with an elongated head. In either case, it usually has a mouth rather than a beak. This constant repetition of a complex and recognizable pattern are unmistakable. Also look for human faces especially on the profile, often there distinct expression is conveyed by a toothy smile, wink, with headdresses and hair ornaments. Shamanic headdresses are often depicted on top of the head in an image be it bird or other creature facing forward (sometimes sideward). The effigies were made with a morphing succession of figures, each emerging from the one preceding it a. A face at one end of the figure, another at the opposite end, giving a Janus-like effect; typically one face is more or less anthropomorphic, and the other is more bird / animal-like or maybe male and female. Birds are really easy because they are so abundant, Owl, Eagle, Duck, Crow, etc,.Effigy’s are often classic animal shapes cats, turtles, buffalo, bear, dog, mammoth, horse, camel, wolves, rabbit, elephant, gorilla / ape are some others but not limited too. The Bottom Line Is That These Rock Carvings Are Amazing Art Sculptures!
