This Delightful old American Doll Would Be A Spectacular Addition to Any Antique Doll Collection!

BACKGROUND & MARKINGS   We purchased this wonderful 26-inch antique Greiner type doll at an Antique Doll Estate Auction in Maryland. This style of Antique papier mache head Doll was originally designed and patented by Ludwig Greiner. Greiner originally of Germany and then later of Philadelphia, PA was granted the first American Patent for a doll head in 1858 and an extension for his Patent in 1872.  The earliest paper labels glued to the doll's shoulder reads " GREINER’S IMPROVED PATENT HEADS Pat. March 30th ‘58."   This doll’s label is dated 1858. That makes this doll over 150 years old!!!

Greiner’s dolls were usually sold with only the shoulderhead. Most of the early papier mache’ dolls have different bodies. The body and clothing were made by the original owner not by Greiner’s Doll Company. The only marking we found on this doll was a “5” stamped on the sole of her leather shoe.

HEAD    This sweet old doll has a papier mache head and a cloth body. Her charming round face has plump cheeks, pale pink closed lips and painted blue eyes. Her face is worn from age.

Her pretty molded black hair is wavy around her face and has long vertical curls in the back. The bottoms of her ears are showing.

CLOTHING   This wonderful doll is dressed in a gorgeous lace trimmed blue and gray striped antique dress. There is a sweet little gold pin at her waist. It hooks at the waist, but the top of the dress does not close in the back (see photo #5) . The old fabric reminds of the dresses worn during the Civil War. She came wearing antique undergarments including 2 half-slips, a chemise and bloomers – all trimmed in lace. Her stockings and shoes are newer. This magnificent old outfit is quite amazing and suits her perfectly!

*We chose not to take off her antique clothes because of their age and the age of the doll.

BODY    This old doll has a cloth torso, arms and legs that feel like they are stuffed with straw or excelsior.   She has broad shoulders and hips and a small waist. We do not know if her cloth limbs are old or newer replacements because they are in very nice condition. You can see the hand stitching.

SIZE    Our charming girl measures 16 inches from head to toe. Perfect for displaying in a cabinet! Her doll stand is included in the sale.

CONDITION   This wonderful old doll is in Good Antique Condition. She has a charming face with lovely black hair and a sweet little smile. Since our lovely antique doll is over 150 years old, she has some age-related wear. She has a hairline crack through one eye and paint wear on her head, especially in her hair as shown in the photos. Her cloth body and limbs may be old, but we are not certain as we did not remove her clothing. Her handmade antique dress is wonderfully designed and looks lovely on her! T he top of her dress does not close in the back. The silky fabric of her dress is very old and has wear including a number of stains, and a few tears and little holes. Our delightful Papier Mache Doll is a special antique lady and displays very well!

This is an antique doll. Please carefully review our photos, as we consider these an important part of our description of the condition and feel welcome to ask questions.
