A.D. 1160-1260 This is a magnificent ancient Pre-Columbian CASAS GRANDES POLYCHROME VESSEL, from the Casas Grandes region of Chihuahua, Mexico, ca. A.D. 1160-1260. This marvelous jar is a masterpiece of dynamic painting that draws the eye over the surface in an ever-changing carnival of patterns. The graceful motifs are evocative of birds in flight. These serve as reminders that nature, rather than pure abstraction, is at the heart of Casas Grandes art, of which this is a superb example. It is characterized by fine-line red and black designs that are considered the pinnacle of the Casas Grandes polychrome ceramic tradition. It measures 7 ½" high, 8" across at the center and is in excellent ancient intact condition with no repairs or restorations. There are natural surface abrasions and encrustations due to age and wear.
