Seller: sf-fineart (2,897) 100%, Location: Los Angeles, California, Ships to: Americas, Europe, Asia, Item: 390285099762 Culture: Chorotega, Original or Reproduction: Original, Details: This is a superb Pre-Columbian CHOROTEGA TURTLE EFFIGY VESSEL, Costa Rica, circa 800 § 1200 A.D. The Chorotega are the best known Pre-Columbian people who lived on the Nicoya Peninsula in today's Costa Rica. The Chorotega came to the peninsula during the 8th century, and linguist links suggest that this group is a descendant of the Olmec in Mexico. They spoke the Mangue language which is of the Oto-Manguean variety and likely migrated from Chiapas, Mexico. This fantastic vessel is decorated with the form of a turtle, with the head and tail added at either side and the legs painted on below. It is decorated all around in patterns of orange, brown red and cream. It measures 6 ¾" high, 5 ½" across at the center and is in good condition, it has been professionally reassembled from several pieces.
