PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND:

1800’s Providence RI Globe Bank $1 Proof PCGS Choice About New 58.

Durand & Whitman Plate Note, Plus Amazing Pedigree.

One of the most significant Rhode Island types from the period and the only example known to us.  This early from approximately 1833-1838 type is unique and It has held that status for the last half-a-century of observation.

The Globe Bank in Providence issued an incredible variety of designs across many series and imprints.

The bank was incorporated in 1831 and remained in business until 1865. From their early notes until issues nearer converting to National status in 1865, they often used globe themed vignettes of many styles. The top central vignette is a popularly used Rawdon, Wright & Hatch image from the period. Archimedes, as an Olympian god, levers the globe on the apex of mountaintop with western civilization in the distance. The right side vignette is extremely unusual. The portrayal of "The Truth" is a very masculine nude male; which is in contrast to the more popular female nudes ordered by most banks. Standing adjacent a globe, he gazes into the mirror named "Truth." This vignette only appears on one other rare type from Georgia. India paper proof, affixed to thick yellow paper.

Plated in numerous references: Haxby, Whitman, Durand Rhode Island, and his "Allegorical Representations" volume. This was in the late Roger Durand's research collection for many years until he sold it privately.

The handling is minor and there is some faint toning. Noted as 'Hole Punch Cancelled" in the India paper. In 50 years, only four collectors have owned it. Ex Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection, Stack's Bowers Galleries-Sotheby's February 2016 Rarities Sale, lot 25 realized $1,880. The Astor Collection. Private purchase from Roger H. Durand, November 2001.
