Roman British Bronze Brooch, Unparalleled, PUBLISHED Ex-Hattatt Collection 2nd C

Roman British Moulded Disc-Brooch, circa 2nd Century AD 

Rare opportunity to own a piece of Roman British history fully published and documented by the great British antiquarian Richard Hattatt.  Hattatt extensively studied Roman brooches and assembled one of the largest and most important collections ever which he published over five volumes.

Our example here is #544, which was published by Hattatt in his 1985 book Iron Age and Roman Brooches. The brooch is affixed with pins to the original Hattatt custom mounting with all of Hattatt's original notes and references. He categorizes it as a Non-enamelled Disc Brooch type, formed with stepped concentric circles with deep rounded bottom channels and an integrally cast central stud. The perimeter is scalloped between eight points, one forming the base of a (broken) chain loop. 

No parallel traced, according to Hattatt.  

Our brooch was published again by Hattatt in his 1989 book Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts. 

The brooch is in the same condition as when published by Hattatt: patina is coppery-brown, some losses as shown in the photos, the original pin intact with about 50% of the end absent.  

We have included photos from the book so you can see the exact citation for the brooch, however the book itself is not included. 

Wonderful, authentic, documented, provenanced from a pedigree collection and twice-published.
