Handmade, cast from bronze or similar copper alloy, covered with beautiful, original, uncleaned green- to brown patina from the past centuries. Slightly bent and worn out according to its age. The large robust necklace loop/bale is in perfect shape. Origin likely 18th - 19th century Imperial Russia. The size of the pendant is shown on the photographs for this listing. Authentic antique symbol of Christian faith. The obverse of the cross pendant bears a traditional image of a Byzantine-like Suppedaneum cross, and inscriptions in Church Slavonic. The Byzantine three-bar cross is used in the Eastern Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches. Such a cross has three horizontal crossbeams: the top one represents the "INRI" nameplate, and the bottom one, a footrest. The footrest crossbeam is depicted pointing up, toward Heaven, on Christ's right hand side where the Penitent thief, St. Dismas was crucified. According to an ancient "Old Believers" tradition, the "INRI" inscription made by Pontius Pilate, is considered profane or blasphemous, and is not used as the nameplate. Instead, the top end of the cross pendant bears a two-word abbreviation in Church Slavonic which means "KING OF GLORY". The Kingship of Jesus is also symbolized by the shape of the large and massive necklace loop resembling the shape of a Byzantine-style crown or an Emperor's throne. The side ends of the central horizontal crossbar bear the Sacred Name of Jesus Christ inscribed as the Greek Christogram, as the "IC" on the left, and the "XC" on the right. The space next to these inscriptions, just below the central horizontal crossbar of the three-bar Suppedaneum cross bear inscription in Church Slavonic meaning "SON OF GOD". The bottom end of the vertical crossbar of the pendant bears the ancient Greek "NIKA" ("VICTORIOUS") inscription. Taken together, all these inscriptions create an ancient Orthodox title of the Savior, "KING OF GLORY JESUS CHRIST, SON OF GOD, THE VICTORIOUS", pointing to the Christ's victory over the Devil, sin and death. An image of the skull, or Adam's head, buried below the image of the Suppedaneum cross refers to Golgotha (Calvary), the elevated site where Jesus was crucified, which the Bible says means "the place of the skull" in Hebrew. An ancient tradition of Catholic and Orthodox Churches held that it was also the burial place of Adam, thus also symbolizing the ultimate victory of Christ over sin and death. The center of the cross is surrounded by a symbolic circle similar to a Solar, or a "Sun", or a Celtic cross. There are four additional, diagonal crossbeams resembling design of the lily flowers (fleur-de-lis) superimposed on the circle surrounding the center of the cross. The diagonal crossbeams usually symbolize the cross of Saint Andrew the Apostle. St. Andrew is considered the Founder and the first Bishop of the Christian Church of Byzantium, and is the patron saint of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Saint Andrew is believed to have been crucified on the Crux decussata (X-shaped cross, or "Saltire"). There are small droplet-like shapes covering the left and right sides of the vertical crossbar of the pendant. They might have a symbolic meaning as drops of the Most Precious Blood of the Savior, Jesus Christ, or as the "good fruits" of the vine sprouting from the Holy Cross. The reverse of the cross bears filled with the text of the abbreviated prayer to the Lord Jesus according to the Russian Orthodox tradition in Church Slavonic meaning approx.: "LORD JESUS CHRIST, SON OF GOD, BLESS, SANCTIFY AND PROTECT ME BY THE POWER OF YOUR LIFE-GIVING CROSS". The Cyrillic letters of the words of the Prayer are very well preserved and identifiable. Please examine all photographs carefully and do your own research if necessary.
