It belongs to the Eastern European Sakae culture, of a Royal Scyth. The appliqué is made from a hammered gold sheet, decorated with a repoussé design. It is formed as a reclining lion, its mane made up from zig-zags. Sadly the appliqué is ripped in places, likely from combat as this type of item was usually affixed to armour and leather shields.OBJECT: AppliquéCULTURE: Early Iron Age / Sakae CultureDATE: c. 5th century B.C.MATERIAL: GoldSIZE: 40mm x 17mm x 4mmWEIGHT: 1.3 gramsPROVENANCE: Ex.
