They were filled with a mixture of petroleum and designed to be charged with incendiary material, probably a mixture containing naptha, the basis of the famous ‘Greek Fire’ of the Byzantines, with a wick which was lit before it was propelled at the enemy. These were often used in ship battles and helped gain many a victory. The term grenade was fashioned by the French since it resembled a pomegranate.
