Seller: Top-Rated Seller godblessyou21 (901) 100%, Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 202423299085 Well preserved, authentic ancient Orthodox "Old Believers" Cross featuring a circle around the centerpiece similar to Celtic-style "Sun" cross, likely a symbol of the "Crown of Thorns", and text of the Orthodox prayer on the reverse. Handmade, cast from bronze or similar copper alloy, inlaid with blue enamel (partially preserved). The cross is slightly bent and mildly worn out, likely as a result of devotional wearing, and covered with patches of dark brown patina. Origin likely c. late 17th to early 19th century Russian North (Pomorian community of the "Priestless Old Believers"). The size of the pendant is shown on the photographs. Authentic antique symbol of Orthodox Christianity. The Pomorian community also known as "Pomortsy" was founded in late 17th century in the Russian Northern region of Karelia on the banks of the Vyg river. The "Pomortsy" Old Believers soon became famous for their most beautiful, detailed cast copper artwork, such as Orthodox "body" crosses and icons, often decorated with enamels of various colors similar to those preserved on this Cross. The obverse of the cross pendant bears an image of a Byzantine-like Suppedaneum cross. The Byzantine three-bar cross is used in the Eastern Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches. Such a cross has three horizontal crossbeams: the top one represents the "INRI" nameplate, and the bottom one, a footrest. The footrest bar is depicted pointing up, toward Heaven, on Christ's right hand side where the Penitent thief, St. Dismas was crucified. There is a symbolic image of the Crown of Thorns, or a wreath, in the centerpiece making it similar to the Sun circle in the middle of a Celtic Cross, or a Solar Cross. The Crown or a wreath on the cross usually means that suffering or bearing the Cross of those who believe in Christ is ultimately rewarded by a crown of the eternal life in His Heavenly Kingdom. The top end of the vertical crossbar of the pendant bears an abbreviated inscription in Church Slavonic meaning "KING OF GLORY". The left and right side ends of the central horizontal crossbar of the pendant bear the Sacred name of Jesus as the "IC XC" Greek Christogram. A worn-out image of the skull, or Adam's head, below the image of the Suppedaneum cross also refers to Golgotha (Calvary), the elevated site where Jesus was crucified, which the Bible says means "the place of the skull" in Hebrew. An ancient tradition of Catholic and Orthodox Churches held that it was also the burial place of Adam, thus also symbolizing the ultimate victory of Christ over sin and death. The reverse of the cross bears well-preserved text of an Orthodox prayer that appears to be the "Troparion to the Life-Giving Cross" in Church Slavonic meaning approximately: "LORD, SAVE YOUR PEOPLE AND BLESS YOUR INHERITANCE, GRANT VICTORY TO ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS OVER THEIR ADVERSARIES..."
