RARE! ANTIQUE 17th CENTURY DUTCH DELFT TILE couple under tree sheperd romance. For sale is an ANTIQUE 17th CENTURY DUTCH DELFT TILE in beautiful blue and white color tone. It is a rarely seen romantic scene of a shepherd couple embracing under a tree. The scenes are based on 'Il pastor fido' (the Faithfull Shepherd), which is one of the most famous 17th century plays. The pastoral tragicomedy, set in Arcadia, was written by Giovanni Battista Guarini and first published in 1590 in Venice. The tiles were made in the Dutch city of Utrecht around 1680. What characterizes them are the beautiful and finely painted trees, the sheep in the background (which are often mistaken for snails) and the shepherds that clearly tell a tale. Each tile is decorated with the 'spider' corner motif. Authenticity is guaranteed. It is framed under a solid dark wooden frame, ready to hang. The tile measures approximately 5” by 5” with the frame 5.5” by 5.5”. The glaze has nice early crackled pattern often seen in early ceramic work. Age related wear and manufacturer imperfections in glaze are to be expected. Please check each picture carefully for detailed condition.
