Seller: Top-Rated Seller godblessyou21 (940) 100%, Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 202544215758 Gorgeous, beautifully preserved Orthodox Cross pendant featuring traditional ornate "Old Believers" design with the center of the cross surrounded by a large circle similar to a "Sun", or a Celtic cross, and large solid necklace bale. Cast from bronze or similar copper alloy; covered with patches of dark, nearly black patina from the past centuries. Origin likely circa 18-19th century Imperial Russia. The cross is slightly deformed and scratched on the surface, and worn out as a result of devotional wearing as a pectoral, "body" cross, probably by several generations of Christians. The surface of the cross is uneven and has small bulges and dents likely resulting from original metal casting defects. The size of the pendant is shown on the photographs for this listing. Authentic antique symbol of Christian faith. The obverse of the cross pendant bears an image of the three-bar Suppedaneum cross surrounded by inscriptions in Church Slavonic. The Byzantine three-bar cross is venerated in the Eastern Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches. Such a cross has three horizontal crossbeams: the top one represents the "INRI" nameplate, and the bottom one, a footrest. The footrest bar is depicted pointing up, toward Heaven, on Christ's right hand side where the Penitent thief, St. Dismas was crucified. The spaces around the crossbars are filled with the words of abbreviated prayer in Church Slavonic before the Holy Cross: "THE CROSS IS KEEPER OF ALL UNIVERSE; THE CROSS IS BEAUTY OF THE CHURCH; THE CROSS IS REGALIA OF TSARS; THE CROSS IS ASSERTION OF FAITHFUL; THE CROSS IS GLORY OF ANGELS; THE CROSS IS SORE OF DEMONS." A symbolic image of the skull, or Adam's head buried below the image of the three-bar cross refers to Golgotha (Calvary), the elevated site where Jesus was crucified, which the Bible says means "the place of the skull" in Hebrew. An ancient tradition of Catholic and Orthodox Churches held that it was also the burial place of Adam, thus symbolizing the ultimate victory of Christ over sin and death. The center of the cross is surrounded by an ornamental circle similar to a Solar, or a Sun, or a Celtic cross. There are four additional, diagonal crossbeams resembling design of the lily flowers (fleur-de-lis) symbolizing the cross of Saint Andrew the Apostle. St. Andrew is considered the Founder and the first Bishop of the Christian Church of Byzantium, and is the patron saint of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Saint Andrew is believed to have been crucified on the Crux decussata (X-shaped cross). The reverse is decorated with a combination of geometric and floral or vine-like ornaments symbolizing the life-giving nature of the Christian Cross, and also referring to the preaching of Christ: "I am the vine; you are the branches" (John 15:5). The crossbar ends are filled with the text of the prayer, likely a continuation of the prayer on the obverse. Please examine all photographs carefully and do your own research if necessary.
