INDIA. INDONESIA. JAPAN. LANKA. LAO. THAILAND. TIBET. Title: Antique Bronze Khmer Female Devata Goddess. Mon Dvaravati Influence. 8/9th C. Thailand Overview:x The Devata with the improbable hairstyle were a fertility symbol and evoked pleasure, although their sensuality was always restrained. In esoteric terms they were aspects of 'Shakti' the divine female energy that underlies the cosmos. According to the canons of beauty of the period, the Devatas embodied the vital forces of nature, arousing pleasure with their sensuous and voluptuous profie, with their firm breast resembling flowers about to blossom, deep navels, and full hips. The women went bare breasted and wound a long cloth called a "Sarong' around their hips, fastening it in various ways. One of the simplest was to fold the free edge into a pocket and tuck it into the waist. xxx Their face was suppose to resemble a full moon, fleshy lips, cheeks as fresh as fruit, and earlobes deformed by heavy earring pendants. Their hair was put up in ringlets, sometimes depicted in such a stylized way that they resembled a tiara. xxx The floral contents and its symbolism was an extension of her sensuous and sometimes contorted hand motion which occasionally incorporated a hand 'mudra' or gesture. Like many of her companions she is generally found holding a root of 'Utpala' or Blue Lotus. Image Details:x An extremely rare and amazing divine courtesan standing poised in a seductive and promiscuous way while displaying a charming attitude. She is presented with a broken off hand which once held a lotus bud, and with both legs and feet detached from a plinth she once stood barefoot. xxx The figure has a slender, bare body, clothed only in a long garment worn low at the waist with the navel visible, secured by a narrow belt and complimented by pocket folds and decoratively folded to the garment hem. Her face appears youthful characterized by a rounded face, almond-shaped eyes, prominent nose, and wide mouth. Her hair is tightly arranged in vertical braids pulled up into ringlets filled with looped braids. xxx The bronze devata is an early surviving example of statuary recovered from the base of an abandoned temple in the Buriram province of northeast Thailand. The piece reflexs characteristics linked to both Dvaravati and pre-Khmer statuary of the period, and demonstrates the regional style of an era whos art and culture was once under the rule of the Khmer Empire for several centuries, and is distinguished here by the exquisite craftsmanship and charming naturalism in which the figure possesses. The bronze remains in solid condition with some partial alloy loss, casting flaws, pitting, and minor surface degradation throughout.
