The reverse bears a great deal of detailed depiction of Instruments of the Passion according to the Gospels. The Cross bears a silver hallmark on the side of the solid necklace bale. The hallmark appears to be the rare "82" hallmark of Russian solid silver items dated c. 1773 (please see the last picture for the listing) suggesting origin of the Cross c. late 18th century Imperial Russia. The Cross has visible signs of wear likely resulting from old age and long devotional wearing such as small deformations, scratches, dents and patches of dark silver patina. The item's size and weight are shown on the photographs. The obverse of the cross pendant bears an image of the three-bar Suppedaneum cross venerated in the Eastern Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches. Such a cross has three horizontal crossbeams: the top one represents the "INRI" nameplate, and the bottom one, a footrest. The footrest crossbeam is depicted pointing up, toward Heaven, on Christ's right hand side where the Penitent thief, St. Dismas was crucified. The top end of the vertical crossbar incorporates an abbreviated inscription in Church Slavonic meaning "KING OF GLORY" used in the Eastern Orthodox pectoral crosses as a nameplate in their top part. The side ends of the central horizontal crossbar bear the Sacred Name of Jesus Christ inscribed as the Greek Christogram, as the "IC" on the left, and the "XC" on the right. Just below the Christogram, there is another Church Slavonic abbreviation meaning "SON OF GOD".Parallel to the vertical crossbar of the three-bar cross, there are images of the two Instruments of the Passion, the Holy Lance (spear) of a Roman soldier, and the Holy Sponge attached to the end of a cane. They are subjects to adoration along with the Cross, and are often depicted on the Orthodox crosses next to the Savior's Cross.A symbolic image of the skull with crossbones, or Adam's head, below the image of the Savior's Cross refers to Golgotha (Calvary), the elevated site where Jesus was crucified, which the Bible says means "the place of the skull" in Hebrew. An ancient tradition of Catholic and Orthodox Churches held that it was also the burial place of Adam, thus symbolizing the ultimate victory of Christ over sin and death. The reverse bears an abbreviated inscription in Church Slavonic meaning "LORD'S PASSION" positioned in the top crossbar end. There are symbolic images of various instruments of the Passion, or Arma Christi, shown below the inscription, such as the Nails from the Cross, the Holy Lance, the Holy Sponge, the Holy Chalice (Holy Grail), the pillar where Jesus was tortured during the Flagellation of Christ (Scourging at the Pillar), the hammer used for the crucifixion with the pincers used to remove the nails, the rooster that crowed after St. Peter's third denial of Jesus, and the Tomb of Jesus in the bottom. Please examine all photographs carefully and do your own research if necessary.
