BURMA: Myanmar, Mandalay period, 19th century. 14 double sided palm leaves, two illustrated decorative teak covers, painted - lacquered in red with elaborate decoration in gilt, text in magyi-zi script, with original tasselled gilt ties this one is massive, the biggest size anywhere 61 x 18 cm, [19th century]. This gilded and red and black lacquered kammavaca (or kammawa-sa) manuscript set comprises two wooden covers with gold leaf shwe zawa work on the outer face, and sixteen unbound double sided ‘pages.’ All pages are present; none have been lost. Each page has been inscribed with an extract from one of the nine khandakas (extracts) of the Pali Vinaya Pitaka which sets out the rules of conduct for Burmese Buddhist monks and novices. The leaves of this example have been made from textile – sometimes the old robes of a venerated monk were used – that was lacquered and cut into rectangular ‘pages’. Kammavaca leaves can also be made from lacquered palm leaf, copper and brass sheets. The covers and the outer faces of the introductory leaves are decorated with devas and other celestial beings within panels amid complex foliate scrolling borders. The two wood covers are illustrated & lacquered. The 14 double sided folios are red lacquer and gold with black lacquer script. Each folio is numbered. 4 folios with cartouches with celestial adorants illustrated. 2 with text on one side and illustration on other, 2 with illustrations on covers and the rest are with double sided text. *** Kammavaca is a Pali term describing verses from the Vinata which outline various rules and rituals of monastic life, consisting of passages from the Buddhist canon Tipitaka, Kammavaca manuscripts are usually highly ornamental, with thickly applied lacquer and gilded decorations on both covers and leaves, and Pali text written in ornate Burmese characters - 'tamarind-seed' script. They are often commissioned by lay patrons as gifts to monasteries. Each leaf is decorated on both sides with five lines of square Burmese script in black magyi zi lacquer made from tamarind seed. Flame-like leaf motifs fill in the space between the lettering. Each leaf is numbered in Burmese script. The pages are read horizontally and are turned away from the reader as it is finished and the next one is commenced. A small hole in the covers and in each page allowed for a bamboo pin to be driven through the set to hold it together when not in use. Kammavaca manuscripts often were presented to novice monks on their joining a monastery, or to mark the ordination of a monk. They were also commissioned and presented to monasteries to mark life cycle events such as an important birthday, graduation, marriage or birth. This example is in fine condition given its age. Original tassel present , the string holding it together still intact, very minor rubbing and lacquer loss to the covers and pages, as might be expected with age and use.
