Rare & superb Japanese carved and lacquered Saya or scabbard for a Wakizashi sword - Edo / Meiji period, circa 1850. The wood scabbard with a mild curve is fully covered with black lacquer ground and decorated with a large, fearsome dragon in gold Maki-E layered lacquer - very fine detailing and a striking effect of the gold over black. Very good condition for the age - no losses or repairs - mild age and use ware - please view all detailed pictures. It measures 58 cm long and would fit a long Wakizashi blade.
