Khmer 'Khleang' Period. 10/11th C. - Massive 40.0" Tall. EXTREMELY RARE 18 YEAR PRIVATE COLLECTION Description: A superb 10th to 11th century hand-carved highly stylized sandstone sculpture of a large scale Male Divinity Figure, probably that of Vishnu, stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional Khleang style, from Khmer's Pre Angkor period. The figure is presented in its unrepaired condition as found, elegantly modeled from a solid block of sandstone, measuring 40.0 inches (101.6cm) in height, without the removable mount. The deity is masterfully modeled in realistic human form, stands in a convincing frontal posture with both arms and legs broken, wearing a short stylized vertical striated sampot hung low about the midriff, with the navel visible, secured by a plain belt, intricately carved and fashioned with neatly incised pocket folds on the left thigh and complimented by an ornate central panel, draped in a double fish-tail notch.XXX The face appears indigenous, typically Khmer, with a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose, smiling lips, and long pendulous earlobes. The head is covered by a Mitre style headdress, a cylindrical hat embellished with winding locks of tightly woven hair, secured by a jeweled band, rising to a lotus flower finial, and enclosed by an interconnected diadem, tied at the back in a knot. At the back of the crown, vertical striated braids of hair are woven down to the nap of the neck.XXX Originally chiseled as a full figured image, the fragmented portion is an exquisite example presented in its unaltered condition, revealing a well weathered and worn surface, with a naturally aged patina of molted variation of dark brown hues and colour throughout. The surface showing minor degradation, and clear evidence of selective erosion, that developes after extensive exposure to the elements over time. This sculpture includes a removable wooden museum mount (matte black), and is 'Sold as Presented'. Data Observation: Excellent Condition, with the exception of small surface abrasions. Severed arms and limbs are typically found in images of this type, having multiple breaks from the environment in which they were unearthed, which does not detract from the beauty of the piece in anyway, as displayed.
