Aubrey St. Clair was born to a recusant Catholic family in the small Norfolk town of Great Walsingham, and attended Fakenham Grammar School, and later, Brasenose College, Oxford, before taking up an appointment with the Foreign Office. This brought him into contact with the Greek Orthodox Church, with which he had a life-long fascination, finally converting at the age of 49 and eventually moving to Lindos on the island of Rhodes. He travelled widely around the Greek islands and mainland and visited huge numbers of churches and shrines, which were the inspiration for his paintings of icons; first using the traditional gouache, and later oils, all painted on objects found near the shrines. After his death, and in accordance with his will, his body was shipped back to England for cremation (this being unacceptable to the Orthodox faith), and his ashes scattered near his birthplace whilst The Walsingham Lament was recited:
Weep Weep O Walsingam, Whose dayes are nights, Blessings turned to blasphemies, Holy deeds to despites Sinne is where our Ladye sate, Heaven turned is to helle; Satan sitthe where our Lord did swaye, Walsingham O farewell!
Unmarried, his estate passed to a cousin; it is through him that his paintings and music (including pieces written incorporating the voice of St Pio) became known to the wider world.
