It was common during funerals in connection with the deceased's prior initiations, which were generally for a charge. Certain masks were so terrifying that simply the mention of them drove women and children flee. The large foreheads, blunt noses, and lips with carved fangs define these masks. This ferocious-looking animal is distinguished by its large snout, massive forehead, sharp jaws, and projecting tubular ears. The surface is crisscrossed with copper strips. Salampasu are a warlike tribe that live on hunting and agriculture east of the Kasai River, between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola. The Tschokwe and Lunda rivers surround them on the west and south, while the Kete and Lwalwa rivers border them on the north and east. Mungongo warrior culture was connected with a mask hierarchy, which included kasangu, which were simple wooden masks, and mukinka, which were copper-covered masks. In order to wear these masks, the aspirant who was initiated into esoteric knowledge by other mask wearers had to sacrifice a significant amount of cattle, drink, or other material things.
