For sale are Two (2) Antique Steel Backplates in Black Finish, plus Two (2) Matching Steel Door Knobs, also in black finish and One (1) spindle. The set is in good used condition. Estimated age would be very late 1890s to 1920. The backplates are made of solid steel. The backplates are thick and solid. One weighed 7.04 ounces, and the other 7.68 ounces. The black finish (possibly japanned) is fading and worn. A little corrosion is present on the back of one of the backplates, especially near the keyhole. There is surface rust on the back of both backplates as well. There are flecks and streaks of light colored paint, particularly along the very bottom edges. On the back of the backplates is stamped the information 2 3/8 x 6 3/4. The raised ring where the base of the door knobs are seated in the backplate is made of solid brass. The backplates measured 6 3/4" long x 2 3/8" wide. Distance from the center of the knob spindle/shaft hole to the center of the keyhole (where shaft of key is inserted) is 2 1/2." The knob hole measured from the back (small hole) is approximately 1" in diameter. Measured from the front (face) of the backplate the hole is smaller, measuring 11/16" in diameter. Center of hole to center of hole on the two (vertical or long) mounting screws is 5 13/16". The distance between the center of hole to center of hole on the horizontal screw holes is 1 1/2". No screws are included. The knobs are also made from solid steel and are relatively heavy. The one without the spindle weighed 5.12 ounces. The knob attached to the spindle weighed 7.04 ounces with the spindle attached. The knobs measured 2 3/16" in diameter. On a flat surface, the knobs were 2 3/16" tall. The finish on the knobs is worn and faded. There are also flecks of paint on both knobs. The knob that is detached from the spindle is easily reattached, and spins smoothly back on the threaded shaft. The knob is missing the set screw to firmly lock it in place. This is a set of American made backplates (manufacturer unknown) and knobs from the late 1890s or early 1900s. Very solidly made and in very nice condition, with the small amount of corrosion mainly limited to the back side of the backplates, where it could be easily addressed without affecting the patina. Please carefully examine the photographs to assess the condition of the solid steel backplates, knobs, and spindle, and to determine whether or not they are suitable for your intended use.
