Okay, so we'll have to sit with this one for a minute, unpack it. For starters, it's a dope ass tee, both in terms of form and content. It's a fantastic photo of Sid, and I love that it's just that (no text needed: anyone worth talking to will know immediately). He wore it well, that bass; he became emblematic of punk rock, which is why the image is so enduring, and yet it's all a bit silly and sort of a shame. See, when I was younger, I'd have rocked this tee proudly and unironically. I was very into the images as well as the music, the fashion of it all. In this sense I sort of relate to Sid. In his first autobiography (No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs), John Lydon describes Sid as a "fashion victim." The type of kid who would primp his toenails with varnish and wear sandals in the dead of winter just to show them off (he'd been captivated, pre-punk, by glam rock). Lydon portrays him as a tragic figure, and I think there's some truth to that. Oddly enough, the older I've gotten the more I've gotten into punk, but it's less about the fashion and more about the philosophy, the ethic. And the thing about Sid is, you could make the argument (though it might be a dumb argument) that he was never really a punk. Because he didn't believe in anything. Not that he was a nihilist--that would imply that he had a philosophy (or that he'd read some books). He clearly loved the clothes, the attention, and we know he loved the drugs. He may have even loved Nancy, but my point is simply this: with figures like Joe Strummer, Ian MacKaye, Ray Cappo, Laura Jane Grace, Kathleen Hanna, Steve Albini, and on an on--with all these great musicians, dead or alive, who have integrity, it's a bit sad that Sid Vicious gets lumped in among the icons. There are so many reasons why we shouldn't venerate him, not the least of which is the senseless violence. Yes, you could argue that Nick Kent was a wanker, but that's no reason to beat him mercilessly with a chain. And that time he smashed Patti Smith's brother in the face with a pint glass--just pure, unmotivated rage, nothing more (and at the time his dumb ass was out on bail, having been arrested on suspicion of murder). So we have to be honest about Sid. Granted, he looked great. But he was very angry, he was f**ked up, and he wasn't too bright. But I'd still rock the tee. Because if there's a punk chick at the bar within my age range, it'll probably spark a conversation. Because I'm superficial and I like to get laid every once in a while. Doesn't get any better than a vintage Screen Stars, single stitch. And this one's practically new, deadstock probably, 19" pit to pit, 27" back collar down. Must've been a very limited run on these as I've never seen it anywhere else. Death-defyingly dope.
