One packet of more than 50 seeds

Raising hybrid Streptocarpus (Cape Primrose) from seed is a great indoor project for gardeners and plant lovers.

These seeds were produced in 2023 from our hand-pollinated plants. Plants bloom in spring and summer, and seeds are collected in autumn and winter. Stored cool and dry, seeds will remain viable for two years or longer.

These seeds can be shipped safely at any time of year. We have tested seeds stored outdoors for several days at temperatures colder than -20C and they germinated just fine.

Choose a seed parent from the drop-down menu. Each packet contains seeds from several flowers of the named cultivar, and from several pollen parents. The pollen parents may be other plants in this list; or they may be plants you can find in our other listings, such as 'Keigetsu,' 'Full Moon,' and 'Cherry Roulette'; or they may be non-seed-producing Silvian cultivars, such as 'Drako,' 'Listy,' 'Gina,' 'Kahinta,' 'Harlequins Lace', 'Harlequin Damsel,' 'Zlotko,' 'Lolita,' 'Roberto Cavalli,' 'Anna Sui,' 'Hebe,' 'Escada,' 'Exotica,' 'DS Neznyi Angel,' 'DS Black Monkey,' and a few others. Sometimes we use pollen from a seedling that looks like a good match. For example, we may use pollen from seedlings with speckled flowers on 'Hotogogisu,' or pollen from seedlings with near-black flowers on 'DS Gotika' and 'Dracula's Shadow.' We are not including photos of every possible pollen parent here -- so many photos would be confusing. You will find some photos in our other listings, and many can be found elsewhere online (one place is our blog, Primrose Fields: Scenes from a Garden in Edmonton, Canada).

Plants raised from these seeds will not be identical to the parent(s). Some will resemble one or both of the parents in colour, form, or markings, and some may not closely or obviously resemble either parent. Expect to be surprised and often delighted.

Seeds begin to sprout around two weeks after sowing, and first flower buds can appear 4-6 months later (depending on the time of year and growing conditions). Display your potted plants outdoors in summer, in a cool, shady spot, or keep them indoors in a window or under lights. A well-tended plant at its peak, usually beginning in late spring, will cascade with blossoms for many weeks, and can go on flowering, at a lesser rate, through autumn and right up to the darkest days of winter. Streps are easy, rewarding houseplants all year round. We have them sitting in windows on every side of the house, where they flourish in bright, indirect natural light.

The germination test photo shows seeds, now seedlings, after 17 days. Most are now large enough to be lifted with a toothpick and placed onto moistened potting mix.

The seeds are very small and can be tricky to handle, but each packet is sure to contain more than the stated number. We also provide a page of detailed instructions to get you started.

Mixed seeds, from named cultivars or from unnamed seedlings, are available from our other listings.
