Here for your consideration  is an exquisite and extremely rare, antique, 1914, sterling silver, Bosun’s whistle, complete with chain ring, fully hallmarked and made by the silversmith Charles Usher.

This is as good as it gets with regards to WW1 Bosun’s whistles. An extremely rare find indeed, I've only got one, once it's gone .... it's gone. You might never find another one this good, and if there's one thing I've learned about antiques and collectables when items are of quality and extremely rare he who hesitates usually loses out. A delightful Bosun's whistle that could well have seen action at the Battle of Jutland. It certainly dates from the correct period in time !!

It features a finely pierced and ribbed barrel, with two delightfully engraved Royal Navy anchors each end, complete with banded curved pipe, and bearing the CU initials for the silversmith Charles Usher. In addition to the lion passant, Birmingham anchor assay office stamp and the date letter 'p' in a chamfered cartouche for 1914.

A lovely sterling silver Bosun’s whistle in good original condition with no dents or damage. Quite unusual when you consider its 103 years old and what its probably been through. It does have some age related silver patina, commensurate with its age, but nothing unusual.

Reuben Usher … trading as Charles Usher (The Usher Manufacturing Company)

First registered as silversmiths in 1911 working from manufacturing premises at Vittoria Works, Vittoria Street, Birmingham. They specialised in cigarette cases, fob medals, goblets, napkin rings, toast racks, trophy cups, and commissioned Navy whistles.

Bosun’s Whistle

A  boatswain's call ,   pipe   or   bosun's whistle   is a  pipe   or a non-diaphragm type  whistle   used on naval ships by a  boatswain . It is pronounced, and sometimes spelled, "bosun's call".

The pipe consists of a narrow tube which directs air over a metal sphere (the buoy) with a hole in the top. The player opens and closes the hand over the hole to change the pitch. The rest of the pipe consists of a "keel", a flat piece of metal beneath the pipe that holds the call together, and the "shackle", a keyring that connects a long silver or brass chain that sits around the collar, when in ceremonial uniform.

Historically the boatswain's call was used to pass commands to the crew when the voice could not be heard over the sounds of the sea. Because of its high pitch, it could be heard over the activities of the crew and bad weather. It is now used in traditional  bugle calls  such as  Evening colours/Sunset , and in other ceremonies.

Pipe Aboard … for flag-rank officers or when an important guest is boarding a Navy ship. This is part of a ceremony called "manning the side" which includes a party of sailors known as "side boys". It has its origins in the need to hoist visiting senior officers aboard using a bosun’s chair  when the weather was too rough for the use of ladders. The bosun would use his call to direct the side boys in the hoisting of the chair.
