Volume 44: Transports Vol. II

McDonnell 119/220
McDonnell 119A/UCX Familiarization Manual (1959) 123 pages The McDonnell 119/220 was a business jet produced by the McDonnell Aircraft in the mid-1950s. It had a configuration that was unique by business jet standards, with four jet engines mounted in individual pods underneath a low wing; it could accommodate ten passengers in a luxury executive configuration but could carry as many as 26.
McDonnell 220 Flight Manual (1960) 102 pages The Model 119 was originally designed to compete for the U.S. Air Force's UTX/UCX (Utility-Trainer Experimental/Utility-Cargo Experimental) contract, but when it lost to the Lockheed L-1329 JetStar (called the C-140 in Air Force service) in the fall of 1959, the McDonnell corporation began efforts to market the type commercially. The company's first tactic was to draw up a deal with Pan American World Airways that would have involved the airline leasing 170 jets for five years, but when no other airline orders materialized, McDonnell decided that opening up a new assembly line for 170 leased aircraft was unfeasible. Instead, they renamed the plane the Model 220 (to commemorate the start of the company's second 20 years of existence) and commenced wide-ranging marketing efforts to sell the aircraft as a business jet, including contacting the 750 largest corporations in the United States. There were no takers, even for the single prototype that had already been constructed.

Lockheed C-69 Constellation
Lockheed C-69 Constellation Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions 120 pages The Lockheed C-69 Constellation was a four-engined, propeller-driven transport pressed into military service during World War II. It was the first military version of the Lockheed Constellation aircraft line. It first flew in 1943, and production of the 22 constructed was shared between the United States Army Air Forces and commercial carriers. Most of the C-69 aircraft built were later converted into civilian airliners under the new designation L-049.

Cessna UC-78 / AT-17 Bobcat
Cessna UC-78 / AT-17 Bobcat Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions 45 pages The Cessna AT-17 Bobcat was a twin-engined advanced trainer aircraft designed and made in the United States, and used during World War II to bridge the gap between single-engined trainers and twin-engined combat aircraft. The AT-17 was powered by two Jacobs R-755-9 radial reciprocating engines. The commercial version was the Model T-50, from which the AT-17 was developed.

In 1942, the U.S. Army Air Force (the successor to the Air Corps from June 1941) adopted the Bobcat as a light personnel transport and those delivered after January 1, 1943 were designated UC-78s.

Boeing KC-97 Stratofreighter
Boeing KC-97L Stratofreighter Flight Manual (1973) 514 pages

The Boeing KC-97 Stratofreighter was an aerial refueling tanker variant of the C-97 Stratofreighter (which was itself based on the Boeing B-29 Superfortress), greatly modified with all the necessary tanks, plumbing, and a flying boom. The cavernous upper deck was capable of accommodating oversize cargo accessed through a very large right-side door. In addition, transferrable jet fuel was contained in tanks on the lower deck (G-L models). Both decks were heated and pressurized for high altitude operations.

While it was an effective tanker, the KC-97's slow speed and low operational altitude complicated refueling operations with jet aircraft. B-52s typically lowered their flaps and rear landing gear to slow the aircraft enough to refuel from the KC-97. In addition, a typical B-52 refueling engagement profile would involve a descent that allowed the aircraft pair to maintain a higher airspeed (220–240 knots). In the early 1960s, the Tactical Air Command added General Electric J47 two twin- jet pods from retired KB-50 aerial tankers to produce the KC-97L. These jet pods increased the speed of the KC-97 (for short periods of time) and made it more compatible with jet fighter planes like the F-84, F-100, and F-101.

Douglas C-118 Liftmaster
Douglas C-118A and VC-118A Liftmaster Flight Manual 490 pages The Douglas C-118 Liftmaster is a piston-powered airliner and transport aircraft built by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958. Originally intended as a military transport near the end of World War II, it was reworked after the war to compete with the Lockheed Constellation in the long-range commercial transport market. In its civilian role, it was better known as the DC-6. More than 700 were built and many still fly today in cargo, military, and wildfire control roles.

Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar
Fairchild C-119B and C119C Flying Boxcar Handbook of Flight Operating Instructions 87 pages The Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar (Navy and Marine Corps designation R4Q) is an American military transport aircraft developed from the World War II-era Fairchild C-82 Packet, designed to carry cargo, personnel, litter patients, and mechanized equipment, and to drop cargo and troops by parachute.
Fairchild C-119F Flying Boxcar Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization Manual 67 pages The first C-119 made its initial flight in November 1947, and by the time production ceased in 1955, more than 1,100 C-119s had been built. Its cargo-hauling ability and unusual twin-boom design earned it the nickname Flying Boxcar.

Convair C-131 Samaritan
Convair C-131A Samaritan Flight Manual 388 pages The Convair C-131 Samaritan was an American twin-engined military transport produced from 1954 to 1956 by Convair. It was the military version of the Convair CV-240 family of airliners.

Transall C-160
Transall C-160Z Flight Manual 517 pages The Transall C-160 is a military transport aircraft, produced as a joint venture between France and Germany. "Transall" is an abbreviation of the manufacturing consortium Transporter Allianz, comprising the companies of MBB, Aerospatiale and VFW-Fokker.It was initially developed to meet the requirements for a modern transport aircraft for the French and German Air Forces; export sales were also made to South Africa and to Turkey, as well as a small number to civilian operators.

The C-160 remained in service more than 50 years after the type's first flight in 1963. It has provided logistical support to overseas operations and has served in specialist roles such as an aerial refueling tanker, electronic intelligence gathering and as a communications platform.

The C-160 is expected to be replaced in French and German service by the Airbus A400M Atlas.

Canadair CL-44
Canadair CL-44 Flight Operating Manual 901 pages The Canadair CL-44 was a Canadian turboprop airliner and cargo aircraft based on the Bristol Britannia that was developed and produced by Canadair in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Although innovative, only a small number of the aircraft were produced for the Royal Canadian Air Force (as the CC-106 Yukon), and for commercial operators worldwide.

Canadair CL-44 Pilots Communicatons & Radar Training Manual 47 pages Initially, the CL-44-6 was produced for the RCAF as the CC-106 Yukon. Once initial problems were resolved, in RCAF service the Yukon performed well and in December 1961, a Yukon set a world record for its class when it flew 6,750 miles from Tokyo to RCAF Station Trenton, Ontario, in 17 hours, three minutes at an average speed of 400 mph. Later, a Yukon set a new record staying airborne for 23 hours and 51 minutes. These records stood until broken by the Boeing 747SP in 1975.

Canadair North Star
Canadair DC4M-2 North Star Operating Manual 323 pages The Canadair North Star is a 1940s Canadian development, for Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA), of the Douglas DC-4. Instead of radial piston engines used by the Douglas design, Canadair used Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engines to achieve a higher cruising speed of 325 mph compared with the 227 mph of the standard DC-4.

The RCAF North Star were unpressurized and were used on a variety of transport duties. Like other North Star , they were notorious for the high level of cabin noise caused by the Merlin engines, as unlike the radials of the DC-4, the exhaust from the individual cylinders is not collected and exhausted via a single outlet, but instead exits the separate individual ejector-exhaust stubs in high-pressure bursts.

In an effort to reduce cabin noise, the sole C-5 variant was powered by Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engines that were considerably quieter. This aircraft was delivered to the RCAF in 1950, entering service with No. 412 Transport Squadron RCAF in Uplands, Ottawa, specially outfitted for the transportation of VIP passengers. It was used to transport the Canadian Prime Minister, the Queen, and numerous other dignitaries on various high-profile missions, serving faithfully for 17 years, later becoming a crew trainer before being retired and sold in the United States.

From 1950 to 1952, during the Korean War, RCAF North Star aircraft were employed ferrying supplies to Korea across the Pacific Ocean. They flew 599 round trips over the Pacific and delivered seven million pounds of cargo and 13,000 personnel on return trips. They flew 1.9 million miles without a fatal crash and outhauled the United States Air Force C-54s on the Korean run. After 1967, the remaining North Star were assigned to No. 426 Transport Squadron RCAF initially deployed to Dorval, Quebec and then to Trenton, Ontario. Gradually, their service life diminished in the 1970s and most were declared surplus.
