The Other Jesus: a Narrative Based on Apocryphal Stories Not Included in the Bible, Arranged, Edited, and with Comments by Robert O. Ballou. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title.DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 213 pages. Publisher: Doubleday & Company, Inc.; (1972). Everybody knows the story of the life of Jesus as it is told in the four gospels of the Bible. But early Christians knew many more stories of the life of Jesus, some of which differed considerably from the accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Some even contradicted those accounts. These stories, embodied in writings called the Apocrypha, are not officially part of the Bible, yet they contributed much to our present-day beliefs about the life and meaning of Jesus. In “The Other Jesus”, Robert O. Ballou has brought together these fascinating legends about the Savior, edited them for the modern reader, and provided an illuminating commentary to connect points of the story. He includes a description of Jesus’ birth by the Hebrew midwife who attended Mary, a detailed account of the Last Supper, a record of Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate, and of the descent into Hell. Here is much more detail about the parents and grandparents of Jesus, and a fantastic story of the “lost years” of his life – a story of his preaching and converting men along the Ganges River far away in India. These, brought together in a contemporary narrative for the first time, make a fascinating companion piece to the Biblical Gospels, and the source of further understanding of the faith that built the early Christian Church. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Unread hardcover in fair dustjacket (in mylar sleve). Doubleday & Company (1972) 213 pages. Inside the book is clearly unread, pages crisp, clean, unmutilated, unmarked, and clearly never read, HOWEVER there are a few small, tan-colored age spots (keep in mind the book is almost 45 years old) to the underside surface of the closed page edges (the age spots are sometimes referred to as "foxing"). The age spots are only visible when book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges, sometimes referred to as the "page block"). The only other caveat to the "pristine" condition of the iside of the book is that there is some sort of a smudge at the top upper (open) corner of the first (unprinted) page of the book. Notwithstanding this small (one square inch) smudge to the front blank page, and the couple of small age spots to the underside surface of te closed page edges, the inside of the book is without further blemish, and as stated, was clearly never read. From the outside, while the cloth covers are absolutely clean and evidence only very mild edgewear, the dustjacket is only in fair condition, evidencing a number of small (1/4 to 1/2 inch) closed, neatly repaired edge tears to both top and bottom edges of the dustjacket, as well as some rubbing and (tiny) chipping to the spine head and heel. The back side of the dustjacket, which is white (or creme), also shows a few small tan age spots. We did our best to make cosmetic repairs to the dustjacket (taping the tears from the underside), and then placed it into a new mylar sleve so as to prevent further damage. While clearly the book falls far short of possessing the "sex appeal" of a "shelf trophy", given the deteriorated dustjjacket, nonetheles it is an unread copy of a very scarce book, and so merits consideration if you're after a reasonably presentable, unread copy of this title. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: A Narrative Based on Apocryphal Stories not Included in the Bible. Includes bibliographical references. Robert O. Ballou is the editor of two long-popular editions of Scripture: “The Bible of the World” and “The Portable World Bible”. He has combined a career as publisher and editor with a life-long interest in religion and scripture in a way that has given increased understanding and enjoyment to millions of his readers. PROFESSIONAL REVIEW: REVIEW: We may think of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament as the only sacred writings of the early Christians, but this is not at all the case. “The Other Jesus” offers an anthology of up-to-date and readable translations of many non-canonical writings from the first centuries after Christ - texts that have been for the most part lost or neglected for almost two millennia. Here is an array of remarkably varied writings from early Christian groups whose visions of Jesus differ dramatically from our contemporary understanding. Readers will find Gospels supposedly authored by the apostle Philip, James the brother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and others. here are Acts originally ascribed to John and to Thecla, Paul's female companion; there are Epistles allegedly written by Paul to the Roman philosopher Seneca. And there is an apocalypse by Simon Peter that offers a guided tour of the afterlife, both the glorious ecstasies of the saints and the horrendous torments of the damned, and an Epistle by Titus, a companion of Paul, which argues page after page against sexual love, even within marriage, on the grounds that physical intimacy leads to damnation. “The Other Jerus” gives readers a vivid picture of the range of beliefs that battled each other in the first centuries of the Christian era. It is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history of the Bible or the early Church. READER REVIEWS: REVIEW: This book contains non-canonical gospels from a variety of sources, as well as books relating to activities of the apostles, non-canonical letters (epistles), apocalypses and revelations, and different canons, all of which were superceded by the Council of Nicaea under Constantine's guidance. These, in other words, were ancient Christian books that Constantine's scholars saw fit to view as heresies, or did not include in the Council's version of what constituted "true" scripture for whatever reason. This is a good book if you have any interest in the ancient's Christian non-canonical writings, and have an open mind on the subject. If your mind is closed and you are perfectly content with Constantine's version of orthodoxy (the Bible as it is), you should probably give this book a pass, as it will no doubt incur your hostility and accuse the author, a true scholar, of having an agenda, or being of suspect parentage--which would be unfair, of course. On the other hand if you have a interested in religious history, these are excellent translations and it is a good book for your library. REVIEW: This book is an enumeration of many of the early Christian Gospels, Epistles, Apocalypses, and so forth that were written by some of the early Christians other than the proto-orthodox. Due to the nature of their authorship, these gospels did not make it into our current canon and are widely unknown by most people. The book it is well written, and its primary audience appears to be those people who have an interest in the area. It is by no means as exhaustive as "The New Testament Apocrypha" in two volumes by Wilhelm Schneemelcher and R. McL. Wilson. For most people though, this will not impede their appreciation of the topic and serve as a very good introduction to the area. Most international orders cost an additional $12.99 to $33.99 for an insuredshipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typically includes some form of rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries, this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+). Rates and available services vary a bit from country to country. You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request. ADDITIONAL PURCHASES do receive a VERY LARGE discount, typically about $5 per book (for each additional book after the first) so as to reward you for the economies of combined shipping/insurance costs. Your purchase will ordinarily be shipped within 48 hours of payment. We package as well as anyone in the business, with lots of protective padding and containers. All of our shipments are sent via insured mail so as to comply with PayPal requirements. We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment. Unfortunately the contents of parcels are easily “lost” or misdelivered by postal employees – even in the USA. That’s why all of our domestic shipments (and most international) shipments include a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are trackable or traceable, and all shipments (international and domestic) are insured. We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex). Please ask for a rate quotation. We will accept whatever payment method you are most comfortable with. If upon receipt of the item you are disappointed for any reason whatever, I offer a no questions asked return policy. Send it back, I will give you a complete refund of the purchase price (less our original shipping costs). Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world – but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology. I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
