Seller: Top-Rated Seller godblessyou21 (904) 100%, Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 202424319674 Unique, authentic ancient Russian Orthodox "Old Believers" two-sided cross featuring the "Russian North"-style three-bar Cross with the Crown of Thorns, or a wreath, and rare version of an Orthodox prayer before the Holy Cross, all hand-carved or struck by hand of a coppersmith. Handmade from bronze or similar type of brass-like copper alloy; covered with beautiful, original dark green patina from the past centuries. Slightly worn out, likely due to devotional wearing by several generations of Christians as a pectoral "body", or baptism cross. The necklace loop is worn out thin on the frontal side, but appears to be structurally sound. Origin likely c. 15th-18th century of the Imperial Russian North (judged by the image of the Cross). There is a symbolic image of the Crown of Thorns, or a wreath, in the centerpiece making it similar to the Sun circle in the middle of a Celtic Cross, or a Solar Cross. The Crown or a wreath on the cross usually means that suffering or bearing the Cross of those who believe in Christ is ultimately rewarded by a crown of the eternal life in His Heavenly Kingdom. The unique features of this pendant's design include the Suppedaneum cross having its top crossbeam attached on the top of the cross, according to the ancient tradition of the Russian North. The footrest crossbeam is positioned horizontally at the bottom, which is often associated with earlier, possibly Medieval, origin of the image (later, the footrest bar has been traditionally depicted pointing up, toward Heaven, on Christ's right hand side where the Penitent thief, St. Dismas was crucified). The top "boxed" end of the vertical crossbar incorporates the two-word, abbreviated inscription meaning "KING" used in the Eastern Orthodox pectoral crosses as a nameplate in their top part. The side "boxed" ends of the central horizontal crossbar bear the Sacred Name of Jesus Christ inscribed as the Greek Christogram, as the "IC" on the left, and the "XC" on the right. In the bottom "boxed" end of the vertical crossbar, there is an abbreviated "NIKA" ("VICTORIOUS") inscription made in Cyrillic letters as "НКA", a symbol of Christ's victory over sin and death, the redemption of humankind and reclaiming of the lost paradise. The reverse of the cross bears a rare version of an abbreviated fragment of the Prayer before the Holy Cross according to the Orthodox tradition meaning: "CROSS IS CORRECTION FOR SINNERS..." (Russian: "КРЕСТ ПАДШИМ ИСПРАВЛЕНИЕ..."). The large words of the text are very well preserved and identifiable. Please examine all photographs carefully and do your own research if necessary.
