We acquired the sculpture in the Mid-1970s. In some respects, it remains a "mystery" piece. We are advised it is an Ethnographic Symbolic Sculpture Figure of a Fertility-Birthing squatting gorgon fashioned after the Bronze Bucchero Childbirth Stamp found on an ancient relief panel in Castel San Mariano (near Perugia), mid-Sixth Century BC E. Munich, Glyptothek. DimensionsLength 19" / Width 13" / Depth 1.50" ColorsWood: Dark Brown to Light Shades of Brown accented with Black HuesChains: Graphite-color - Links are sealed CloseArtist Signature is carved on the back: DENIG NP - or- It may be read as BENIG NP.It is carved from English Wynch Elm Fitch which is considered a superior hardwood, only surpassed by the finest Koa. It has incredible natural grain with stunningly beautiful sculptural patterns and textures. The wood is highly figured and is presented with a nice soft polished finish. The Swirly wavy grain and overall characteristics are indicative of this most sensational timber. The craftsmanship is absolutely superb. The artist appears to have painstakingly carved the piece to perfection as evidenced in the images. The choice of the wood slab appears to be a deliberate decision by the artist to take full advantage of the great variety of grain lines, swirls and wavy patterns. It appears the face, arms, legs, and other body parts are meticulously carved on grain with lines and patterns which closely resemble real parts of the body. The meaning of the shackled wrists and ankles remain a mystery. THANK YOU! WE APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS. OUR MISSION: We strive to offer quality items with good photographs.
