Johnstone (1936-1991) studied with Peter Voulkos at UC Berkeley in the 1950s. In addition Johnstone also studied with Paul Soldner. She eventually went on to build her own salt kiln in the early 80s. She was known for adding a chunky wood lids with leather cords that attach to the vessel.

This beautiful multicolored stoneware jar with a unique abstract pattern is a product of Sandra Johnstone's California studio. The jar has a round shape with one compartment, a handle lid, and measures 6.5 inches in height, width, and diameter. It is a mid-century modern style piece with a vintage feel, produced using the art pottery technique and finished with salt glaze. Has the original leather strap and cork lid.
The jar is easy to clean and weighs 3lb 2oz. It is a one-of-a-kind original piece, handmade by Sandra Johnstone, a student of the renowned ceramic artist Peter Voulkos, with an incised backstamp. This jar is perfect for decorative purposes and can be used to store various items.
Above the incised signature has some faded writing in a red ink. The writing looks like it was a personalization when gifted to someone.
There are no chips or cracks.
