Obon are used to carry small dishes and tea cups (see picture 1). It has an all hand carved raised floral design (see pictures 6 & 7) This type of carved and lacquer ware is called kamakura-bori. This obon is signed by the Kamakura artist, Yoshimi (see picture 8).A comparable hand carved lacquer try sells for over $500 in Kamakura today.It measures 16 1/2" long by 8 1/4" wide by 5/8" thick (42 x 21 x 1.5 cm) and remains in very fine condition.
