This is a very special cognac leather vintage 'Emdee' Doctor bag made by Schell Leather Company in the 1940s or 50s. It borders on good used condition, due to age there are scratches, loose leather inside, scuffed leath on one corner. PLEASE REVIEW ALL PICTURES BEFORE PURCHASING PLEASE. THERE IS NO KEY!The medical professional carrying this bag stood out among the sea of those carrying common black medical bags. This bag is made of top grain cowhide leather. It has brass latches. The latch appears to be solid brass and works perfectly. Charles J. Schell told the patent office the object of this latch was "to provide a lock mechanism the members of which cannot spring open unexpectedly while being subjected to the usual stresses and strains encountered in normal use." Unfortunately, while the latch holds tight, I do not have the key for its lock so the bag cannot be locked. When it opens it is very much like a tackle box in that two fold out compartmental trays fold out and over the side. The difference being users of this bag store their medical instruments in these compartments rather than fishing lures. Leather flaps cover both trays and snap shut to keep the contents secure. A leather belt with loops is at one bottom side to secure other instruments. Dimensions: Length: 15" Height: 10" (outside from bottom to top closed) Width: 6.5" Tray compartments: 2 trays 13" x 4" Condition:  The tray hinges work perfectly. The trays are clean and their covers snap securely. In addition, the exterior leather surface of this bag is clean.  The metal feet protected the bottom from tears. Each bottom corner has a protective layer of leather. One corner is scuffed. As the thPlease review the photos carefully because they are part of this piece’s description and condition. Age research: While I do not know the exact date of sale, my research suggests it was manufactured sometime between 1938 and 1950. This 'Emdee Model' was patented in 1934 and the 'Emdee' name was trademarked in 1947. However, patent # 2293363 found next to the brass lock was applied for in 1938 and granted in 1941. The bottom of the bag has stamped numbers 5800-80-17 Manufacturer Background: Schell Leather Company manufactured this medical bag. Schell was originally based in Cincinnati, Ohio from around 1865 until the 1980's when it moved to Florida. The company was founded by Albert and Charles J. Schell and later operated by the Schell family until it was sold to a business that manufactured plastic cases and moved its operations to Florida.
