Description

This is a great example of the British-Australian sword bayonet (Mark I), which was designed to be used with the short magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) rifle. The Pattern 1907 bayonet was used by the British and Commonwealth forces during the First and Second World Wars.

This particular bayonet was manufactured in Australia during WWII for the No.1 MkIII Enfield rifle. It is commonly known as the SHT.LE, SMLE, S.M.L.E., "Smelly" etc.

NOTE: British and American forces retained longer bayonets in response to Japanese forces in the Pacific, who continued to use longer bayonets.

MARKINGS: The bayonet has very clear marks:

The right side included a broad arrow (government acceptance mark), X (bend-test mark), and OA (Orange Arsenal).

The left side includes MA (Mangrovite Arsenal )1907. 1. 7. 44 (August 1944).

The leather scabbard is stamped with Mangrovite (Arsenal Manufacturer), and the locket and shape are stamped OA (Orange Arsenal).

DIMENSIONS:

Overall length of the bayonet in the scabbard: 58 cm (22.83 inches)

Overall length without the scabbard: 55 cm (21 3/4 inches)

Blade Length: 42.5 cm (16 3/4 inches)
