A Portrait of Westmount En francais ….. Montreal, La Petite Montagne, Un Portrait de Westmount This book was published side-by-side in English and French, with English to the left and French to the right on each page. Photographs of several pages in the book have been included in this listing From the Preface ----- Westmount is certainly one of the finest residential communities in Canada, a charming, small town in the midst of a major metropolis. Montreal's Little Mountain captures Westmount's character, from the gingerbread on the Victorian rowhouses of Lower Westmount and the small-paned dormer windows of the Hurtubise House to the richly carved stonework of the Richardsonian-style Library and the grandeur of the mansions high on the hill. Although some buildings are older, most of Westmount was built in the Victorian and Edwardian era of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. During this period, most of Canada's wealth was concentrated in Montreal: in the daytime on St. James Street and at night largely in Westmount. So the quality of the architecture and neighbourhoods is not surprising, the people who built here could afford the best. They chose what is probably the best site on the Island - the sunny, southern slope of the gentle mountain just west of the city which later grew to engulf it. And they chose to build well - solid stone and brick buildings, often designed by the nation's leading architects. They were building at what was, in many ways, the high point of Canadian architecture, when society could finally afford the care and solidity of quality construction, but before industrialization stripped away the craftsmanship and detail. They built in careful harmony with their neighbours: a sense of propriety and municipal supervision ensured coordination and high standards throughout the city. But Westmount's heritage is found not only in its architecture, it is also the natural features of the city: trees, flowers, lawns, walks in the bird sanctuary, the view from the lookout. Westmount is marked by the way buildings meet nature and the slope oft the mountain: stone retaining walls on the Boulevard, rocky cliffs and stone outcroppings between and beneath the homes high on the mountain.
