antique pillow layover 63x19" wh linen w embroidery, 8" crochet trim each end. I buy vintage linens at local estate auctions to pass them along to you. This week it's antique bed linens. This is a white linen pillow layover with great embroidery and crochet trim. And what is a pillow layover? This is a (now obsolete) bed linen that would be laid over the pillows after sleeping on them, so that the wrinkles would not show. They are unlined, just a single thickness of fabric unlike a pillow sham. These days of course no one bothers with that, but these are wonderful pieces of handwork that can also be used as runners or dresser scarves. This one has a white linen body measuring 47" long by 19" wide; that length does not include the 8" of crocheted trim at each end! The crochet is done in two patterns forming large diamond shapes with crenellated edges - quite magnificent. At each end of the linen there is a band of white-on-white embroidered flowers measuring 12" long, hand embroidered very beautifully; the flowers are quite raised. Please use the zoom function to see all the detail. I have laundered and pressed this and found the fabric to be in sound condition, soft and strong and not brittle. It is nicely white with no spots, stains, rips, or holes. I hope you will find a use for this lovely piece. It would be nice for a historical bedroom display, or even to use.
