Beautiful dance of death lithograph from approx. 1845. - Sheet dimensions: approx. 34.5 x 25 cm - slightly stained in the outer edge, otherwise in good condition. -- Splendid Dance of Death lithograph from around 1845. - slightly stained in the margins, otherwise in very good condition. -- In 1839, Hieronymus Hess copied the watercolors that Emanuel Buchel had made after the Dance of Death in Basel, which had since been destroyed. "However, the artist took great liberties in doing so, which were in no way inferior to those taken by Hans Hug Kluber during the renovation in 1568. He gave the dying people expressive physiognomies and portrayed well-known originals such as the cook at the Hotel zum Storchen" (HAB). Hess also portrayed himself as a painter and - in a reference to the Opium War of 1839 - replaced "Heyden" with a Chinese. -- In 1839, Hieronymus Hess copied the watercolors that Emanuel Buchel had made after the Basel Dance of Death, which had since been destroyed. "However, the artist took great liberties, which were in no way inferior to those of Hans Hug Kluber during the renovation in 1568. He gave the dying expressive physiognomies and portrayed well-known originals such as the chef of the Hotel zum Storchen" (HAB). In addition, Hess portrayed himself as a painter and - in allusion to the Opium War of 1839 - replaced the "Pagan" with a Chinese.
