ARTIST:  S J Ker, Colonial British School (possibly, as initials SJ and Ker for Kerala, India)   SUBJECT:   Views of street markets, Mumbai Bombay, 3 scenes framed as 1   MEDIUM:    Watercolour on paper  SIGNATURE:  Each signed S J Ker,  DATE:  c1900s SIZE:  Viewable pictures, the left and right images:  22.5 x 13.5cm (9 x 5.5 inches), central image  26 x 17cm (10 x 6.5 inches), Frame, 63 x 41cm (25 x 16 inches)  PROVENANCE:   From a recent country estate auction, private collection  CONDITION:   Good for their age; colourfast and strong contrast; we believe these works were cleaned, probably to remove historic foxing and then framed as one, which is evident on close inspection, with minor degradation to the watercolour, especially to the image to the left – does not detract and noticed on close inspection and mentioned for the sake of accuracy   FRAME:  A contemporary frame shows just light age-related wear

We present 3 super quality landscapes in watercolours (framed as 1), street markets of Mumbai Bombay India c1900, each signed S J Ker, possibly just the artist’ initials SJ and the location Ker, abbreviation for Kerala, India.  Believed to be British – Colonial School artist, little more is found on the painter, well worth researching.  3 charming studies, full of colour and movement.  Presented in good condition in a contemporary frame, the three paintings as one will look fabulous displayed.
