A magnificent bronze Slave Collar, Eastern Roman / Byzantine Empire, later 1st. millenium AD. From and Danish Collection we recently re-purchased this exceptional piece of historical evidens to the Slavery in the Easter Roman Empire in the 1st. millenium AD. This collar was made for female slaves, who were send shopping groceries and other supplies on the market. It has a hinge that can be opened and closed firmly around the neck with a little tap that fits into the ring. Unlike the earlier Roman slave collars, that had run-away-tags and couldn't be removed easily, this was worn so that everybody could see that this was a slave from a prominent household attending her business. Made in solid bronze and weighing a solid 500-550 grams, finely decorated with lines on the front side and with the backside bare and thus smooth to the skin. Though, a little to the heavy side it's actually quite comfortable to wear. Outer diameter: Nearly 15 cm.-15,4 cm. max. (5,9 x 6 inches). An extremely interesting collar and a conversation center piece in a great collection. Ex. H. Henningsen Collection. Est. $2000-$2500. Start: $995.
