Item Description: I am pleased to offer this original and old hand-made Japanese sword, or Nihonto , brought back from WWII. The sword is a shortened Koto tachi made ca. 1290-1320, with attribution to the famous swordsmith Ryokai . The blade and the mountings are in Near MINT condition. The sword has a blade length of 25 inches (64cm). The sword is katana length but is shortened and features a subtle, old style curvature with straightening in the monouchi suggesting the sword was once a tachi. The blade also includes a smaller ko-kissaki. The hada is a highly visible running ko-itame nagare mixed with burl ko-mokume . The hamon is a narrow hoso suguha mixed with midare that is present the length of the blade ending in a ko maru boshi. The hamon has activities like ko-ashi and uchinoke in and around the hamon.

The tang is mumei , or unsigned and is suriage , or shortened. The shape and workmanship in the blade suggest it was made early to mid Koto, from late Kamakura period around late 1200’s to early 1300’s. The saya shows sayagaki of an attribution to Ryokai . Ryokai was a famous swordsmith from Yamashiro province working ca. 1290-1320 who was part of the very famous Rai school. He was the link between Rai and Nobukuni schools. He is exceptionally well-regarded with a Jo Saku ranking by Fujishiro. The workmanship in the sword – the shape, hada, and hamon – align with an attribution to Ryokai. The sayagaki looks to be from a Honami sword appraiser. This sword needs additional research and a shinsa should be consulted as final authority.

The blade comes in wooden shirasaya. It is in Near MINT condition. There is a sayagaki , or writing featuring an attribution, on the saya. The blade is in Near Mint condition. It shows no nicks, little to no rust, and few scratches along its length. There are a few small ware along the blade, most notably some small lateral ware in the shinogi-ji. The hamon is very narrow and at times runs close to the edge, and in one small spot appears to drop off for a few mm. There do not appear to be any flaws like hagire.

Based on the history, age, and workmanship, I think this sword would be an outstanding addition for a collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.

Here are detailed measurements for the sword:

Nagasa: 64 cm

Sori: 1.0 cm

Motohaba: 2.7 cm

Sakihaba: 1.6 cm

Kissaki: 2.9

Nakago Nagasa: 17.0 cm

Kasane: 0.5 cm
